Ubuntu 9.10: Installing and Working with Malayalalam fonts

Earlier, as a beginner I felt so difficult to work with Linux. Especially in areas like installing a new software, mounting NTFS partitions, installing my CDMA modem driver etc. But Linux is improving day by day. Newer versions of Ubuntu detects wide range of modems automatically! One can easily mount and manage NTFS files by clicking on your windows drives. Installing Malayalam font swanalekha is also a simple task even though the process contain a set of commands. All that you need to do is to create a shell script (Shell script is a script file that can be used in Unix environments to run a set of commands) and store these commands to that file. Save the script. Connect to the Internet and run it as root.

The steps for installing and using swanalekha phonetic keyboard are as follows:-

Step 1. Open Text Editor (Applications-> Accessories->Text Editor)
Step 2. Copy following commands to it:-

Step 3: Save the text file as install-ml.sh to desktop/ (you can give any name but dont forget to use '.sh' extension)

Step 4: Open Terminal. (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal)

Step 5: Type-> sudo bash

Step 6: Go to Desktop location (Eg. cd Desktop)

Step 7: Type-> sh install-ml.sh (name of the shell script to be executed)

Step8;: After completion Reboot (or use Ctrl+Alt+Back space).

SCIM tool will be enabled and you can select malayalm swanaslekha phonetic keyboard layout for typing malayalm letters.

Building a fully functional linux OS with OpenSuse 11.0

Eventhough OpenSuse is an open source OS just like ubuntu it comes with a bundle of software packages and repositories, we cannot play media files directly in Totem media player (which is the default Media Player of OpenSuse 11.0). You can install packages from additional repositories. Installation is so simple. Just download the repository files with ".ymp" extension and double click to configure and update your system. These repositories include packages from well known sources like VLC,GOOGLE,KDE, GNOME, NVIDIA and ATI.

Configure WLL Modem in Ubuntu

People who are using WLL wireless modem may often found that they can't configure it in Ubuntu or other linux distros. Some distros like OpenSuse automatically detects WLL modem but in ubuntu auto configuration is not possible. manual configuration requires following steps:-

Before starting this you need to ensure that your WLL phone is connected with the PC through USB cable.

Step 1: Open terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> terminal)
Step 2: Type the command : sudo wvdialconf.

This will add the device file ttyACM0 the dev directory.

Step 3: Type gksudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

This will display a text document like:

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
ISDN = 0
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
Phone =
Username =
Password =
Stupid Mode = 1

Step 4: Type your user name, password and phone number in the required areas and save the file.

Step 5: On Terminal Type wvdial. This command is required every time you want to connect to internet. Enjoy....

It says that GDrive - An online storage facility expected to come in the nearby future- comes with unlimited storage of files including email,webalbums,music files videos etc. It brings together our storage usage from Gmail, Picasa Web Albums allowing us to upgrade for a fee. The fees are as follows:-

For 250 GB $500.00 per year
When Taking the words of a Google Technition it is expected to come in this march. We have to wait until then to see how can it override existing file sharing services such as Rapidshare.

Aamir Khan as a Director!!

Aamir Khan becomes a Director ...Not in cinema, in real life. He has directed his latest movie Taare Zameen Par successfully and it will be released soon. I think his each film is different, from all others and that makes him special. In this film his wants to say that "EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL". They are like stars that came to earth.
The movie is written by Amol Gupte who was initially supposed to direct the movie. But after shooting for a few scenes of Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan realised that Amol Gupte wasn’t as good a director as a writer. So Aamir stepped in to direct Taare Zameen Par which will also be produced by Aamir Khan Productions.
Aamir says that Direction was a rough journey for him because of the lack of preparation. He says: "I must confess that it was one rough journey because I had to jump in without any preparation. I'd always wanted to direct a film but this was not an ideal situation. I'd have liked to spend time on the script and visualise it. Working with kids can be tough but we had a great bunch of kids, especially Darsheel, Sachet and Tanay Chheda. It was extremely challenging and a great learning experience. Despite all that, it was fun."
This film will release on December 21st. We have to wait until then to see the craft of Aamir as a Director.

OpenSUSE 10.3 Alpha Development Released

Andreas Jaeger has announced the availability of the third alpha release of openSUSE 10.3: "I'm glad to announce the third public alpha release of openSUSE 10.3.The following are some highlights of Alpha3 compared to Alpha2: on x86_64: Firefox is now a 64-bit package and uses nspluginwrapper to handle 32-bit i386 plugins if needed; AppArmor uses now a new parser; the kernel patches have been reworked completely; GNOME 2.18 mostly integrated; update to kernel 2.6.21-rc6; new openSUSE updater running natively under GNOME; further fixes for using libata by default for IDE devices; new YaST ftp-server module; the package manager handles more than one CD/DVD drive." Finally Debian 4.0 Arrives

Debian Community released DEBIAN GNU/Linux 4.0 having code name "ETCH" on April 8 2007. Debian 4.0 supports 11 processor architectures and includes a choice of three major desktop environments: KDE, GNOME, and Xfce(GNOME 2.14, KDE 3.5.5a, Xfce 4.4 desktop). OpenOffice.org 2.0.4a and GIMP 2.2.13 are also included in this distro. Servers such as MySQL, Apache are also available.

Note that Debian is on of the most popular linux distos available today...Many derivations of this are available today. Try it if you support free software movement.
